A very balanced spring with mild days and cool nights, with rainfall in excess of the period, generated a very balanced bud. A quite rainy June has balanced a hot August, which has meant that within a few weeks we have accelerated the maturation of both the Merlot and the Barbera.
This Merlot arrived at the winery in perfect condition, being one of the first picked grapes, so it avoided temperatures which were still quite summery in early September. Whilst the Barbera, being one of the latest picked grapes, had suffered, especially in the final phase of dehydration, thus increasing the alcohol grades. The two wines were aged separately in barrels for 6 months, only to be assembled in July, just before bottling.
The elegance of the Merlot and the power of the Barbera make the I Contrari a balanced wine to match with red meats and mature cheeses.
