The Torre dei Nanni, is a tower of uncertain origins that was built as a lookout structure to give the possibility to the inhabitants of the Castello village to dispose themselves in defense of imminent enemy attacks.
It was used as a real defensive system consisting of several towers located throughout the territory. In particular, the Torre dei Nanni was located between the Torre della Mombrina, to the north and the Tower of Sant’Antonio Vecchio in the south, in Borgo Castello.
It was certainly similar to the other watch towers of the time, isolated from other structures, without external stairs.
Its entrance had to be quite narrow, very high from the ground level and reachable using a ladder to retract inside the tower at night or in case of danger.
The Torre dei Nanni served as a shelter for settlers and an alarm outpost.
The position was ideal, since the eye on the east stretched across the Rio Fiumma on the ridges of Montebudello and della Motta.
To the north, the emerging Monticelli from Selava della Lovara and the origins of the Claudia caravan route, as well as those of the Panaro fluvial plain, were spied out.
THE FIORINI FAMILY INVESTS ON THE TOWER
In 2009 we come to know this farm, in this hilly area south of the province of Modena surrounded by vineyards and immediately we are so fascinated, that we decide that this place that is Savignano sul Panaro, would become our choice of life.
The farm covers 12 hectares of vineyards, exposed for almost 4/5 to the south / east where Pignoletto, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Barbera, Sangiovese and Riesling and Lambrusco di Grasparossa di Castelvetro are grown.
And so it is here that in 2011 we decided to build our new winery designed with eco-sustainability criteria and low environmental impact.
INTEGRATION WITH THE WINES OF COLLI BOLOGNESI
Our history has always been linked to the production of Lambrusco, but here in Savignano in 2011 the new adventure begins, thus expanding the range, also on the production of the new ‘Torre dei Nanni’ line of wines from the Colli Bolognesi.
The first was the sparkling Pignoletto ‘Spazzavento’, followed immediately by Pignoletto Superiore ‘Gendinella’, Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Cà Mombrina’, Barbera / Merlot ‘I Contrari’, Barbera “La Torre”, and finally the Cabernet Sauvignon / Sangiovese “Poggio della fuga”.
BEAUTIFUL MEETING FOR WALKS IN THE VINEYARD
The Torre dei Nanni is a fantastic and evocative place to appreciate, in any season, the beauty of the hills between Modena and Bologna.
We organize guided tours both at the winery and at Torre dei Nanni to make our guests understand the dedication and passion we put into the production of excellent craft wines.
